So you are dreaming to become a singer? That is great, know you now what you want to do with your life. But I am sure you have one big question on your mind. What does it take to be a good singer, and how much learning is involved in learning how to sing? Everyone starting out asks the same question.
The first step on the path of learning how to sing is lessons. Despite what your parent or parents may think they cannot teach you how to sing. Unless of course they are an instructor, or an accomplished singer themselves. This in most cases involves you going to a tutor and being taught the basics of singing. Be forewarned though this is going to be rough, and will probably make you want to quit.
Having the thought of quitting, once in a while, is actually good. Why? Because it also gives you a chance to think about what you are going to miss when you quit. What’s not good is to have that thought of quitting and actually giving in to that thought without even trying your very best to learn how to sing. In life, you always have to give your best shot… giving up is inexcusable.
One way to learn how to sing is to do basic exercises. You will have to practice vocalizations and sing simple songs over and over again. Most likely, if you are impatient, quitting will come to your mind. Keep in mind that when you master the very basic of singing, you will be able to do more advanced stuff and you will be able to do it fluently.
Once you’re done mastering the basics of singing, your vocal coach will then have you start on singing actual songs. By singing actual songs, you’ll be able to try to match the role that you are learning to sing for. Don’t get disappointed if you didn’t sing the song perfectly at first try, because it really takes a lot of practice and vocalization to be able to sing beautifully.
During this time you may also be required to do physical exercises. These are required to develop your lung capacity, and ensure you have plenty of breath to sing with. Make sure to take good care of yourself, and stay healthy. You will have a sore throat or two during your training. After all you haven’t done this before, and how else are you going to learn.
The few months, or maybe years you may spend learning how to sing will pay off big time in the long run. When you get to the point where you can practice and develop on your own never forget to practice notes you haven’t tried before. This will ensure you stay versatile, and allow you to be flexible in your singing abilities. Considering the dog eat dog attitude of the industry that’s a very important ability. If you can stick out from the crowd this will give you an edge in finding work.
In closing learning to sing can be very simple. You may practice songs you heard when you were a child at first in order to get the notes down. Vocalizations will teach you how to vocalize notes, and pronounce words in the correct manner. This is very important, and if you can keep with it you will reap the rewards.
